Seed Phase I
Flashe on Paper
2026
This is my first experimentation with abstraction. The painting began in black flashe paint; loose and fast. Sweeping black paint and diluted paint strokes across a warm, creamy ground, with dry-brush streaks, drips, and splatters at the edges. It reads as a turbulent field of motion, like fire or smoke caught mid-swirl. The warm paper tone shows through everywhere and gives the whole piece a parchment-like glow. The white then arrived as a concealer for certain areas of the black, creating structure and order. The final layer on top is much more deliberate. A periwinkle or rex blue is laid down in thick, ribbon-like arcs and coils, then outlined and veined in white. These forms have a sinuous, almost calligraphic or tribal-tattoo quality. They loop and knot around each other, with small branching junctions that make them feel part-vine, part-tentacle, part-bone. The white edging gives them a luminous, slightly electric look, as though they're glowing against the dark.
