The Queens Who Built the Movement

Oil and mixed media on canvas
52" x 46"
2026

Mixed media artwork featuring diverse women in colorful traditional and modern clothing, set against a brick wall backdrop with a sign reading 'The Stonewall' and various posters.

This piece is the first in a series of three that explores the perseverance of the queer community. Despite the attempts at our erasure, we will always persist and we will always fight back. This is the first piece in the series that explores the Stonewall Riots and all the drag queens and people in the queer community who rose up and fought back against oppression.

Drag queens were the leaders of the riots and were among the first to fight back, challenging the police who targeted them for not conforming to gender norms.

The Queens Who Built the Movement highlights our struggle and our powerful ability to overcome. It honours those who came before us and without them, the queer community wouldn't be what it is today.
